Welcome to our Year 5 Class Page
Year 5 Staff
Mr Walsh (5W) and Miss Jones(5P) (Class Teachers)
Mrs Marsland (Teaching Assistant)
We are all very excited to be working with your children in their penultimate year at St. Luke’s. This page is a great place to find ALL the information you need for the year ahead. We will update this page with pictures of your child’s learning in school throughout the year. If there is anything that we can help you with, then please do not hesitate to ask.
Homework for year 5
This year pupils will be expected to
- Practise one page of 20 spellings each week. Spellings will be given out on a Tuesday and tested on the following Friday.
- Pupils should continue to read regularly at home (a minimum of five times a week, approximately 20-30 minutes a day), and parents should sign reading records at least once a week. Parents should check their child’s understanding by asking questions about the texts your child has chosen to read.
- In addition, this term we would like all children to regularly practise their times tables using Times tables Rocks Stars. Each child has been given their own unique username/password and this can be accessed on a smartphone, computer or tablet. You can access the site by clicking the link below.
There may be occasions when we will ask the children to do some extra pieces of homework to support ongoing work in class.
History – Communication and Technology Since 1948
After learning about how much communication and technology has developed, Year 5P produced a radio advertisement for a product of their choice. The results were fabulous, and everyone was able to showcase their different talents…Well done!
Plant Reproduction – Year 5P
Year 5P have been learning about the life cycle of a plant, and how they reproduce. We have taken cutting from a Geranium plant, in the hope that they will reproduce ready to plant in the playground planters. We will update you on the progress and results after the Easter break.
Year 5 – Easter Baking
Tasty chocolate chip and crushed mini egg cookies were on the menu in Year 5. Everyone helped to bake and make an Easter basket to carry home their Easter cookie. After trying a leftover cookie, the staff can vouch that they tasted delicious!
Class 5P – Easter Extravaganza
A fantastic day was had by all! Lots of fun activities to help raise money for the Eco-Council including; Eco-Quiz, Word Hunt, Guess the Chocolate Quiz, Recycle Relay, Bottle Throw, Plant a Seed and come dressed in Spring colours. Thank you to all that sponsored your child, and keep an eye out for any new changes to our school being more Eco-friendly.
Class 5P – Britain Since 1948 – Playground Games
Year 5 spent one of their History lessons trying out games that would have been played in the past. It was great to see the children getting involved and enjoying some old-fashioned games.
Class 5P – Thinking of Others
Year 5 have been collecting and donating for those in need. It has been lovely to see so many of our thoughtful children and their families kindly donating to others. May God Bless each and every one!
Class 5P – Manchester United Physical Education
Over the past term, Year 5 have had the opportunity to take part in PE lessons led by Manchester United. The lessons have had a focus on team games, developing skills, and many other aspects of PE. The children have really engaged, and made fantastic progress in all areas…WELL DONE!!

Class 5P – Mothering Sunday
Year 5 put lots of love and effort into making a card for their chosen loved one. We spoke about Mothering Sunday, and why we celebrate it as part of our Church Calendar.
Class 5P – Lentopoly
As part of our Lent period, and thinking about what Jesus sacrificed for us, we are playing Lentopoly to set ourselves a daily promise. Speak to your children about how they are getting on each day, and help to encourage them to complete their promise so that they can colour in each section.
Class 5P – Hot Seating Tim the Ostler
After doing lots of work on The Highwayman, everyone had to think of questions to ask Tim about how he feels after such a sad ending. We had two fantastic volunteers that answered all the questions in great detail. Well done!
Class 5P – Model Transport Homework
To support our theme on ‘Journeys’, some children made a superb effort to make a model of their favourite transport. Time was given for the children to present their work to the class, and share any interesting facts about their model. Well done to all the children that took part!
Class 5P and 5W – Science Day
Both classes had great fun experimenting the reaction between fizzy pop and Mentos mints. Everyone had to predict, test and evaluate the process. The best part was completing the experiment and collating the results.
Class 5P – World Book Day
Wow…A super day was had by all!
We all made a great effort to come dressed ready for story time, and spent the day enjoying books and sharing our favourite choice of reads. It was lovely to see Class 5P share their favourite books with the younger children. Some children managed to do a book swap, and we spent time reviewing all the different genres. We ended the day by taking part in a live lesson through the BBC website. It was exciting to get involved and send emails with the hope to get a mention – unfortunately we didn’t succeed but were still engaged with the experience!
Class 5P – Captain Confidence
START and Salford Red Devils Foundation presented ‘The Adventures of Captain Confidence!’
The children explored the mental and physical health for children at Key Stage 2. The sessions focused on:
- The Five Ways to Wellbeing
- Online Safety
- Body Image
- What makes us feel good
Comics and stories were used to build confidence, improve resilience and support health and well-being.
Class 5P – Forces Investigation
Everyone enjoyed investigating the distance the card travelled from the marble being released from different heights. The force of the marble being dropped had an effect on the distance that the card travelled. They measured the distance travelled and evaluated whether their predictions were correct or not, and why?
Class 5P – Mayan Masks
As part of their Mayans Topic, class 5P researched the purpose of wearing a mask during the Mayan period of time. They designed, made and evaluated own masks that are now proudly displayed in class for all to see. Scroll down for photographs…
